Donald Trelford
Donald Trelford, after obtaining his MA at Cambridge University and serving
as a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force, started on the Coventry
Standard and Sheffield Telegraph and became Editor of the
Thomson-owned Times of Malawi at the age of 25. While in Africa he was a
correspondent for The Times, The Observer and the BBC. He joined
The Observer in 1966 and was Editor from 1975-93. During that time The
Observer was twice named Newspaper of the Year and in 1983 he was commended
as International Editor of the Year. He was Professor of Journalism Studies at
Sheffield University from 1994-2000 and is now a Visiting Professor. Donald is
also President of the Media Society, Vice-President of the British Sports Trust,
director of a new National Academy of Writing and a member of the Competition
Commission's newspaper panel. He writes on sport for The Daily Telegraph
and on media for the Evening Standard in London. He has published a
number of books and is a regular broadcaster. He joined the Board of the London
Press Club in 2001 and was elected its Chairman in 2002.
